Export to the United Kingdom

As transport partner, we would like to inform you about the upcoming Brexit developments. The rules regarding the export of composite products to the United Kingdom will change from the 1st of October 2021. There are still a lot of questions. In this blog, we show you what you need to do to prepare for the 1st of October with a guide on how to qualify your composite food products.

What are composite products?

A composite food product is a product of animal origin (POAO) or a product with as main ingredient plants. To be clear, when plants are just used for flavoring or processing the products, it is not a composite food product.

The documents that you need from 1 October 2021

When you export to the United Kingdom, you need one or all of the following documents:

  1. Health certificate
You must apply for the health certificate in your own country. The original certificate must travel with the consignment.
Read more about the health certificate
  2. Commercial documentt
If you are exporting an exempt product or if the Eu exporter says you need one, you need a commercial document. The commercial document must include details of what is in the consignment and the names of the sender and receiver.

Exemptions on controls

Some composite food products are exempt from the control by export to the United Kingdom. A product is exempt if all the following points apply:

– The product is made without processed meat, meat extracts, or powders.

– Made with less than 50% of any other processed POAO.

– Labelled for human consumption.

– Heat-treated, so the product is shelf-stable at ambient temperature.

– Securely packaged or sealed in clean containers.

If your composite food product is exempt from the control, you do not need a health certificate, be pre-notified, and your transport does not need to stop at a border control post when you enter the United Kingdom.
